As a fire raging in some mountain glen after long drought—
and the dense forest is in a blaze, while the wind carries
great tongues of fire in every direction—
even so furiously did Achilles rage,

Then King Priam spoke to them saying,
"Bring wood, O Trojans, to the city,
and fear no cunning ambush of the Argives,
for Achilles when he dismissed me from the ships gave me his word
that they should not attack us until the morning of the twelfth day."

When they were got together in one place shield clashed with shield
and spear with spear in the rage of battle.
The bossed shields beat one upon another,
and there was a tramp as of a great multitude- death-cry and shout of triumph of slain and slayers,
and the earth ran red with blood.
